Nat Knowles: Kayapo Defenders of the Amazon

Nat's expedition involved working with the Kayapo Indigenous communities of the Xingu River to train 28 young Kayapo youth community members in camera trapping techniques, wildlife photography and expedition filming, GPS mapping, drone surveillance and monitoring, and computer data analysis skills.

These technological skills were integrated with and supported by traditional ecological and cultural knowledge shared by five Kayapo elder field guides. They were also captured on film or recorded alongside the monitoring data. This project aimed to enable the Kayapo communities to continue to defend their 10.5 million hectares of pristine Amazon rainforest from rampant deforestation, something they have done for generations.
