EVENT DETAILS Interactive online talk: please have your questions ready! Time: 7:00pm Date: 26 November 2024 Dr Catherine Hauw is a veterinary surgeon with a passion for travelling and wildlife. After volunteering as a wildlife vet all over the world, she realised she wanted to make a bigger impact on the conservation world, and started a MSc of Wild Animal Health at the Royal Veterinary College in London. The project she undertook was close to her heart: working to improve cheetahs' health in Namibia. She will continue travelling around the world and working in conservation as a wildlife veterinary surgeon whilst documenting her adventures on video. Her research project (a Scientific Exploration Society-endorsed project), is about assessing dietary and environmental lead exposure in captive and free-ranging cheetahs in Namibia. Lead is a real One-Health problem, due to its toxic effects on the environment, animals, and humans. She analysed the dietary lead exposure in captive cheetahs fed lead ammunition-shot game meat and investigated the effect of the environment on lead exposure in wild cheetahs. In her talk, Catherine will share her research from her study, which aims to increase awareness of the effects of lead exposure. SES Explorer Series powered by Optimist Performance.

We held our 2024 Oscars of Exploration on 16 October at the Royal College of Surgeons, London. We were packed out and had an amazing evening, full of inspiration and fun. We celebrated together and made new friends, and learnt new things...what better! The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) Tue, 12 Nov 2024 18:30 - 21:00 GMT An evening of celebration to mark the 50th Anniversary of the SES and John Blashford-Snell's Zaire (now Congo) River Expedition 1974. Join us to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this large-scale expedition that navigated almost all the 2,700 miles of the hazardous Zaire (now Congo) river, carrying out important research into eye disease and a wide variety of scientific projects. Pioneering the use of giant inflatable craft and jet boats, the expedition was supported by the Armed Forces, Scientific Exploration Society, Natural History Museum, Daily Telegraph, and the RAC. Over 170 servicemen, scientists, and medical experts from ten different countries took part in one of the largest British expeditions ever launched. Important scientific work was carried out by a large team of specialists and an 11-strong medical group did a valuable study of onchocerciasis (river blindness) which affects up to many millions of people worldwide. Books and TV films were produced and no lives were lost. On completion of the expedition, John Blashford-Snell and the team were awarded the Segrave Trophy at the RAC.
The Great Zaire (Congo) River Expedition: 50th Anniversary Lecture
Ella is a National Geographic Explorer, paleoanthropologist, evolutionary biologist…and stand-up comic. Her debut book The Handshake: A Gripping History is a Times and Sunday Times Book of the Year and covers the history and anthropology of the handshake. She holds a BSc in Genetics from University College London, an MSc in Taxonomy and Biodiversity from Imperial College London/Natural History Museum and is currently undertaking a PhD in Neanderthal rates of evolution at University College London. Ella is an expert in her field, specialising in Neanderthals and caves. She can be often found on expeditions in hostile, disputed and unstable territories. This award was formerly known as ‘SES Explorer of the Year’. We changed it to ‘John Blashford-Snell Explorer', which reflects the essence of this award; a modern-day explorer, who echoes the same grit, determination, and integrity as our Founder JBS! Meet our 2024 John Blashford-Snell Explorer Ella Al-Shamahi
Alyssa Sargent: Hummingbird's Eye View, Colombia 1 August to 20 September 2025 Alyssa is this year's winner of our SES Explorer Award for Inspirational & Scientific Trailblazing. Alyssa is a wildlife biologist who specialises in applying tiny electronic devices to study hummingbirds. She is equally passionate about devising creative ways to share the wonder of the world’s smallest birds with people everywhere, such as with Hummingbird Sugar Rush, her ongoing board game project. A 4th-year PhD candidate at the University of Washington, Alyssa conducts all of her fieldwork in Colombia. Alyssa’s expedition to the Colombian Andes will explore the lives of hummingbirds in an age of escalating, human-driven scarcities. Working alongside and learning from the local community, she and her international team of experts will leverage novel technologies like tiny tracking devices and hummingbird-mounted cameras to learn what makes hummingbirds ‘tick’ when they’re surrounded on all sides by competitors. Meet our 2024 SES Explorer Alyssa Sargent
Paula is this year's Pioneer with Purpose Honorary Award Winner. Paula is a distinguished Kenyan conservationist and wildlife filmmaker renowned for her work in environmental education and advocacy. As the CEO of WildlifeDirect, she has spearheaded initiatives such as 'Hands Off Our Elephants,' driving significant policy changes in Kenya. An award-winning filmmaker, her documentaries, including National Geographic's 'Secrets of the Elephants', have garnered international acclaim. Paula is also a National Geographic Explorer and a passionate advocate for youth engagement in conservation, fostering a new generation of environmental stewards across Africa. Her dedication to preserving wildlife and empowering communities makes her a prominent figure in global conservation efforts.

EVENT DETAILS Time: 7:00pm Date: 29 October 2024 Venue: The Boulevard Bar, Hollywood Arms, 45 Hollywood Road, London SW10 9HX (off Fulham Road, near Chelsea and Westminster Hospital) (Drinks from 6.30pm, talk will start promptly at 7pm, followed by Q&A) In the summer of 2023, James Kempton led Expedition Cyclops, a scientific research expedition to the Cyclops Mountains of Indonesian New Guinea. This expedition was supported by SES via our Explorer Awards programme. The expedition objective was to rediscover Attenborough's long-beaked echidna, unseen by science for 62 years, and to undertake research on the ecology and evolutionary history of the range's animals. The expedition formed part of James' interest in the biogeography of the New Guinea region, which he holds alongside an interest in disease epidemiology (the basis of his current research project at the University of Oxford) and bird flight biomechanics (the subject of his PhD). In his talk, James will recount the search for Attenborough's 'lost' echidna, and the trials and joys of Expedition Cyclops. SES Explorer Series powered by Optimist Performance.

Each year we celebrate our Explorer Award and Honorary Award winners. Through our Explorer Awards programme we provide grants to young explorers leading scientific expeditions that focus on discovery, research, and conservation. Our annual Explorer Awards encourage ‘Scientific Trailblazers’ and ‘Pioneers with Purpose’ by supporting projects that will leave a lasting legacy and raise awareness of the environmental issues we face today. Alongside our annual Explorer Awards, we also recognise amazing achievements in the world of science, conservation, adventure, and exploration through our Honorary Awards. SES Honorary Awards recognise and celebrate individuals who have achieved great things, and whose passion, determination, and grit, are an inspiration to us all. New for 2024 are our SES Raleigh Explorer Awards! In collaboration with Raleigh International and Operation Raleigh Alumni, we have launched the SES Raleigh Explorer Award, an initiative that provides opportunities for young individuals from less advantaged backgrounds in the UK to embark on transformative volunteering opportunities abroad. With the Society's historical ties to Raleigh International through Operation Raleigh and Operation Drake, SES joins forces to break barriers, foster diversity, and strengthen the connection between SES and the Raleigh community. Awards will be presented at the Oscars of Exploration on Wednesday 16 October at the Royal College of Surgeons, London, sponsored by RSK and supported by Base Camp Foods. Everyone is welcome.
