SES Raleigh Explorer Award
Building on a Legacy of Transformation
In the 1970s and 80s, the Scientific Exploration Society launched Operations Drake and Raleigh - pioneering international expeditions supported by the then Prince of Wales that took thousands of young people from across the world into uncharted territory. Through exploration, citizen science, and real adventure, these programmes built leadership, forged confidence, and inspired a lifelong commitment to making a difference.
Now, decades on, that legacy continues. The SES has partnered with Raleigh International, the Raleigh UK Society, and Raleigh Alumni to create the SES Raleigh Explorer Award - opening the door to transformative expeditions for young people who might otherwise never get the chance.
SES Raleigh Explorer Award: Opening Doors to Transformation
Launched in 2024, the SES Raleigh Explorer Award gives young people from less advantaged backgrounds something priceless: the chance to discover who they truly are and what they're capable of achieving.
Over 10 weeks in the rainforests of Borneo or the wilderness of South Africa, participants face real challenges that can't be solved from behind a screen. They work alongside international teams on conservation projects and community initiatives. They lead when they've never led before. They push through doubt, discomfort, and homesickness - and emerge on the other side fundamentally changed.
Many return home seeing themselves differently for the first time: as leaders, as problem-solvers, as people who can make a genuine difference in the world. The confidence, resilience, and sense of purpose they develop shapes everything that follows.
What the Award Covers
Each SES Raleigh Explorer Award funds a complete 10-week expedition, including flights, insurance, and the full programme cost - removing the financial barriers that too often determine who gets to explore and who stays home. Participants are encouraged to fundraise for personal kit and airport travel, giving them ownership of their journey from the very start.
This year, we're supporting five young explorers to embark on expeditions that will define their futures.
