Henry Gage: Gorongosa: A National Park Restored
MOZAMBIQUE
species of large mammals, numbering in the thousands. Since then, much has changed: poaching during the Mozambican civil war (1977–1992) eliminated 90% of the park’s large herbivores and nearly all predators. Remarkably, park managers restored herbivore abundance to pre-war levels and have now reintroduced predator species. Henry and the expedition team will journey to remote areas of the park to capture, GPS collar, and track antelope, studying their behaviour before and after predators were reintroduced. In collaboration with Mozambican scientists, veterinarians, and rangers, the team will leverage the park’s improbable history to study a foundational question in ecology: how do predators shape large herbivore communities in savannah ecosystems?
